Shawn is a 48-year-old widowed male with 2 children, ages 16 and 18. Shawn comes to the clinic to see a counselor at the urging of his manager, who has been concerned about Shawn’s poor performance at work. Shawn tells the counselor that he has been with the same company for the past 15 years, is in a management position, and has had a good record and reputation at work. His manager has not written him up because he has always done well in his job and has been a team player and asset to the company. He tells the counselor that his manager suggested he use his EAP benefits and talk to someone about his intense sadness. The counselor asks Shawn about the sadness and his difficulty at work. Shawn states that he doesn’t feel like he has interest in anything and doesn’t find any type of joy in socializing with his colleagues. He used to be a team player but now avoids the team activities, doesn’t eat lunch with anyone, and rarely goes out after work. He expressed the feeling of walking through life in a fog, not feeling much of anything, but trying to maintain his responsibilities at home and work. The counselor encourages Shawn to continue and asks what he does at home with his children. Shawn responds that he is glad they both have their driver’s licenses so they can take themselves to and from school and related activities. He will occasionally attend an activity to support his children. He says that his daughter is in the jazz band, and he has gone to a performance put on by the band to show support for her. His son is not involved in any school activities and works after school or is with his girlfriend. Shawn stated that at home he does the weekly chores like laundry and grocery shopping. He doesn’t make meals very often, and his kids cook for themselves. He spends a lot of time sitting in a recliner in his bedroom looking at old photo albums.
The counselor asked him to talk about what is in the albums. He explains that the albums are all from his years in college when he seriously dated his wife, their wedding, their early years of traveling together before the kids were born, and their years as new parents. The counselor asks about his wife, and Shawn explains that 14 months ago, she died from complications from type 1 diabetes. He said that they grew up together and had known each other since the sixth grade. They dated through high school, went to college together, and married 2 months after graduation. She is the only woman he had ever loved. Neither of them ever even dated another person. He finds no joy in life since she passed and has been in a fog just “going through the motions” since her death. He says that he feels heartbroken. He loves his children, but without her there, he doesn’t get excited about their life or events like he used to. He tries to fake it, but he knows that they can tell the difference. He stated that both kids grieved the loss of their mom but had moved on in their schools, band, jobs, relationships, and futures after 6 months. He never has been able to get past the day she died. His life stopped on that day.
