Substance use and abuse is a common concern that clients bring to the counseling session. As a counselor, it is important for you to recognize symptoms, understand how substances affect functionality with clients, and know how to treat substance use and abuse.
Visit the Evidence-Based Practices Resource Center page from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). There are many resources here that clinicians can use to stay current on the best practices for working with clients who may be experiencing mental health disorders, substance use disorders, or both.
