She started to believe the hurtful words spoken about her, internalizing them and developing negative perceptions about her body image.
As the bullying persisted, Emily\’s self-esteem plummeted further. She began to isolate herself from her friends and family, avoiding social interactions altogether. Emily\’s parents noticed changes in her eating habits; she started restricting her food intake, skipping meals, and expressing guilt whenever she did eat. Emily\’s parents became increasingly worried about her well-being and sought professional help.
School counselors contacted her parents as they were concerned for Emily. They recommended consulting with a mental health specialist. Emily’s parents do not have medical insurance and are not able to provide this specialized care. The school provided a mental health counselor to provide an assessment and Emily was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder. The specialist noted that Emily\’s experiences of bullying had significantly contributed to her mental health issues. Emily confessed to having suicidal thoughts, feeling overwhelmed by the relentless bullying and societal pressures to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty.
