In Alabama, we have to have a total of 3,000 hours of supervised counseling sessions. Which seems like a lot, but honestly, if I were a client, I would feel better knowing I was at the hands of a practiced professional. Being in the presence of a professional gives the new graduate time to learn techniques appropriately and to get proper feedback. It is important to be able to take constructive criticism when working as an appretence. You can’t be expected to get it right on the first try every time. I have heard and seen on social media that education does not make you intelligent. Therefore, just because you have a degree in something does not make you an expert. Experience makes you an expert. The best way to get experience is through practice. And it is not fair to clients to basically use them as guinea pigs as you get your bearings in a new profession. Being under the watchful eye of a seasoned counselor will ensure you are on the right track to a successful practice and helping as many people as you can in a safe and healthy way.
