Hello,
A counselor is a licensed practitioner that provides mental health services for individuals seeking help. To be a counselor means providing an ethically based client center practice based on theories that have been studied and peer-reviewed. Counselors are client-focused on mental health services, while others, like psychologists and psychiatrists, focus on diagnosing and treating clients. So when reflecting on my decision to become a counselor, my goal is to provide intentional mental health services in underserved communities. In addition to promoting wellness, educating people on the benefits of seeking help for their concerns, and practicing person-centered care for longevity in health with clients. To add to my reasoning for becoming a counselor, the American Counselors Association is an important organization to become a part of for various reasons because it is a resource for counselors and clients. For example, the ACA’s promotion of empowering individuals in the mental health field to educate, be culturally inclusive, and provide ethical services and wellness is why both parties must be aware when coming into the mental health field. In addition, the ACA’s history and mission is to ensure counselors perform an ethical practice and help whenever they need it, like legal services. So overall, it is essential to understand organizations like ACA and what it means to be a counselor to ensure the best ethical practices are being performed and help with resources if needed for specific situations.
