The faculty-community relationship can be a fully collaborative and fully symbiotic one, but it may be challenging to eliminate all sense of hierarchical overtones in the relationship. However, the relationship does not need to remove all hierarchical overtones in order to be fully collaborative and symbiotic. There must exist structure and order within governance in order to approach tasks and goals in an organized and efficient manner (Mato-Santiso et al., 2021: Yang et al., 2022). Hierarchy is not necessarily negative; what makes workplace relationships negative or positive are the existence and appropriateness of channels of communication and the commitments to action (Yang et al., 2022).

While both parties can benefit from and support each other, there must still exist differences in power, authority, and decision-making regardless of the relationships (Mato-Santiso et al., 2021). For example, school administrators and faculty members have different roles and responsibilities, which can create a hierarchical dynamic. Administrators may have decision-making power over budget allocation, staffing, and curriculum development, while faculty members may have limited ability to influence these decisions. Similarly, community partners may have different agendas or goals than the school, which can create tension. More interestingly, a faculty member could have personal ties to a local business, creating conflicts of interests and, perhaps, a need to have more decision-making power regarding that business\’s interests, involvement, and potential interactions, including impacts on the business.
