Narrative Therapy seems very confusing but according to Neukrug & Hays, the view of human nature is actually views of human nature (2023). Narrative therapy is a positive, strength-based, future-oriented, and anti-objectivist approach, which eschews any therapeutic model that tries to reduce a person’s identity to a solitary, unified pathological definition. It will impact the counselors by having them be self-aware and Counselors should be aware of their worldview and combination of privileged and oppressed statuses. They should be familiar with how their cultural identity plays out in their personal and professional experiences, and they should engage in culturally appropriate skill development to effectively communicate and apply their knowledge, and counselors should be aware and knowledgeable regarding how the counselor and client’s cultural identities and combination of privileged and oppressed statuses influence the therapeutic process. They should enrich their skills and take actions that promote a positive therapeutic alliance. This could be about the stories that we tell ourselves and/or someone tells us. Someone told me that I was not good enough for college and that I needed to go to a secretary school. That was a narrative that I followed for a long time. Now, look at me, getting a master’s degree. It is just stories that we believe about ourselves.
