The Perdue case is about a lawsuit that was filed against the Perdue Farms. Perdue Farms are known for raising poultry which is one of the largest producers of chicken, pork, and beef in the United States. These farms produce a lot of toxic and hazardous waste which is also not healthy for the food that is being grown there. Within this case, there were poultry that were raised in inhumane conditions. “Air pollution from concentrated animal feeding operations emanates from numerous sources on the facilities, including barns, feedlots, manure storage and animals themselves. Decomposing animal manure is the primary cause of this pollution. Decomposing manure emits at least 160 gases, including several gases regulated in one way or another by the Clean Air Act, such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and several VOCs. The Department of Agriculture estimates CAFOs create three times more waste than the entire American population does annually” (Hoover, 2013). In the United States, the factory farming industry has a system that works with both elements of Capitalism and Socialism. In the Perdue case, Perdue Farms leans more towards Capitalism because of how they raise poultry in unhealthy conditions while aiming for a specific weight for each product because more weight means more money for them. This provides substantial evidence that they are more concerned about self-interest. Within this system, these businesses are monitored and are regulated by the government and they make sure these businesses are meeting the required standards. Factory farming regulations focus on problems with animal care, food and waste management. There are agencies that are both federal and state that enforce the safety of consumers who are purchasing the product and they make sure that those customers are protected from harm that can be caused within these farms as well as enforce other public health procedures and make sure products are freshly packaged and ready to be given to consumers correctly. In reference to the environment, The negative effects of the interplay between business activity and the environment is the Perdue farms prioritize profits over environmental concerns. The factory farming industry produces large amounts of waste which causes a negative impact to the environment. Furthermore, it leads to environmental pollution which includes water pollution and toxic emissions.
My ethical analysis of this case study would be deontology. The reason why I chose this is based off of the single instinctive principle of duty which is the golden rule. “I should do to others what I would want them to do to me” (Fieser, 2015). Perdue Farms should apply the thought of how they would want the poultry that they were looking to purchase if they were on the consumer end. They should implement ethical practices that prioritizes the environments well being. Due to the high demand of production, there are a lot of farms that are more concerned about profits and put that as a priority over the wellness of their products being in clean environments. In todays society, the farms enhance their products by feeding GMO to their animals for them to produce quicker which is not healthy for consumers as well because it can cause long term health risks. The government should enforce more consequences for businesses that do not meet environmental standards.
