Freud and Jung believed strongly in the unconscious being responsible for our behavior (Jones, 1957). Psychoanalytic techniques are all about uncovering the unconscious material which they believe is present in all people. These techniques include everything from dream interpretation to projective tests to free association. Although as a clinician, I do use some of these to get an idea of what might be lurking under the surface, I have to be very careful not to interpret anything for the client as this would not be an indication of their unconscious material. Also- other limitations are that psychological processes and especially unconscious material is difficult to objectively measure. I do enjoy dream interpretation- but have to keep in mind that sometimes the content of a dream is not related to anything specific. I like to focus on the very emotionally charged parts of dreams and ask the client to explain how that relates to their life circumstances. This is usually a successful approach rather than trying to determine exactly what objects or experiences mean in the dream. We have to keep in mind that the brain processes things in images and symbols- focusing on those as well can be effective in getting to unconscious material.
