The junk drawer is located in the kitchen and is the place that holds anything that is left on the counter that does not belong there. The three items randomly selected were McDonald’s barbeque sauce, a black pen, and a screwdriver. The sauce is a result of a child’s obsession with chicken nuggets without sauce and may be expired. The black pen is necessary to jot things down that pop up at the most inopportune times. Finally, the screwdriver is a necessity to fix things that tend to require a tool in the kitchen or laundry room. These items have absolutely nothing in common and outside of the sauce probably do not belong in the kitchen.
As previously stated, the items do not have anything in common besides being in the drawer. The sauce may possibly be edible if it is not expired; however, the pen and screwdriver are not edible. The pen is a useful object to have in the kitchen to write notes and grocery lists; however, the sauce seems to have no use currently. The screwdriver is used to fix loose screws that occur in cabinet hinges or doors; however, unlike the pen, it is not used as often as one would imagine. Honestly, it is unclear how to appropriately synthesize these items because they do not present any information. Would one conduct research on each item and attempt the synthesis process that way?
Summarization simply involves taking a source or item and stating what it is or what it says; it does not require any critical thinking to summarize because the information is really just restated in simpler terms (D’Urso, 2020). The comparison process relates to pointing out how things relate to each other. The synthesis process requires a deeper understanding of what is read in order to take information from multiple sources and merge the information to support a common claim or theory (D’Urso, 2020). Information from the medical field can be connected to the educational field to support a theory based on the oil industry if the process of synthesis is done correctly. When one can pull information from areas outside of the problem area to support the theories, the process of synthesis occurs.
