The literature review section of empirical articles provides background information on the previously published research of a topic. It allows the researcher to develop an understanding of what has already occurred in that specific area and could be used to identify areas that may need attention concerning the topic. The literature review section helps to increase knowledge in the particular field and could be used to identify changes needed to create a successful study. A researcher could also use the literature section to identify themes in the previous research; comparing studies to each other aids in identifying gaps in research. A literature review can be used to make the connection between the chosen topic to a different field or topic (Oliver, 2012). The literature review can help prove why new research is needed and beneficial to the field. This section could also be used to break down theories related to the topic and assist in building new theories.
