How you keep your composure when people confront you

Casey Defield
Hi Cathy,
I would love to learn more from you about how you keep your composure when people confront you. In a counseling setting, we may have patients that do not agree with what we are saying to them or are already in an emotional state and we tell them something they don’t want to hear. I always struggle to support patients or people in general that are having a bad day and being rude to me. I also find redirecting very difficult as my past trauma is usually triggered by anger, frustration, and shouting. The idea that you seek clarification, reflect, and respond in a way that supports the individual is definitely something that takes time to learn and it’s great you’re doing that in your current job!
I need 175-word response to this.
