Introduction
This topic will go beyond the basics of global health ethics and incorporate issues related to human rights. The definition of human rights will be discussed and an outline of key examples of what should be protected for every individual, regardless of background or culture. Then there will be a differentiation on the rights of individuals from the rights of people as a whole, focusing on how to ensure that these rights are not discriminated upon or threatened in the face of today’s ongoing human rights issues.
Define: What are Human Rights?
“Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status” (United Nations, n.d.). They are inalienable and should not be compromised. These principles coincide with moral norms specific to standards of human behavior that are protected by local governments and international law. Some examples of these rights include (United Nations, n.d.):
Right to life and liberty
Freedom from slavery and torture
Freedom of opinion and expression
The right to work and receive an education
As the world continues to become increasingly globalized in an age of technology, what rights should be universally protected? More importantly, how can institutions uphold these rights while coordinating with the vast number of governing nations throughout the globe? Watch the video “What are the Universal Human Rights?”

Outline: Human Rights Issues of Today
2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the United Nations’ development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Although the articles enclosed within the Declaration have paved the way for peace and security for so many individuals throughout our world, many nations continue to experience negative effects of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. For so many fortunate people, these acts may go unnoticed. For the societies continuing to experience such events, however, the threat to human rights is alive and relevant today.
