Note: Keep in mind that this is a real case. In contrast to Joe in Lesson 3, where we analyzed how Joe should respond, here we enter the field of descriptive ethics and seek how Joe will most likely respond to the screams of his co-worker. ________________________________________
Joe works in a human service organization serving the physically disabled. When he first joined the organization 12 years ago, he signed a document agreeing that he would never abuse or neglect an individual. He was trained to understand that if he were assigned one-to-one with an individual, it would be considered neglect if he ever left that person alone. Joe understood that if that occurred, he would be summarily fired. Staff members who violated this rule have in the past all been fired.
Joe is bathing a multiply-handicapped individual in that person’s apartment. The person is unable to sit upright for more than a few seconds. Joe was assigned one-to-one supervision of that person. Given that responsibility, Joe is not permitted to be further than arm’s length from the person, nor ever to lose eye contact while the person is in the bathtub.
While bathing the individual, Joe hears screams from a staff member in the hallway outside of the bathroom. She is calling for help, screaming, “He’s going to kill my baby.” Evidently, she is being attacked by a large and violent individual who lives at the same location. The staff member being attacked is 7 months pregnant. There is no other person at the location at the time the incident is occurring.
Assume that Joe understands all of these facts correctly at the moment. In an essay of between 3 – 3.5 pgs. answer the following questions:
1. Identify and explain three concepts that you believe are important in determining how Joe is likely to respond to this situation (you may use Kohlberg for only one of these concepts); and
2. Identify the specific information that each concept would provide in helping to understand Joe’s choice.

Our assignment this week asks us to determine what Joe should do applying various ethical theories and following the Five Step Ethical Decision-Making model.
As I explained in my Monday email to the class, the key is not necessarily what you decide Joe should do, as reasonable people may differ, rather, the key is why you chose that action (your rationale) and how you applied the Five Step process.
Step one of the processes has us identify the problem. You do a good job laying out the basic factual scenario and the consequences. But the process goes on to ask a variety of questions like who are the stakeholders involved, is additional investigation needed, is inaction an option and so on. You don’t seem to respond to those questions. Nevertheless, you lay enough of a foundation for us to clearly more on.
Step two asks you to identify possible solutions. You first suggest leaving his patient and rushing to help the threatened coworker. The second option has Joe staying with the patient and calling for help. Third is to wait out the situation and wait for someone else to come and help.
Next is step three. This is the key step of the whole process, as we assess each of the options. That step three analysis has you specifically assess the consequences of each option, as well as examining the relevant duties involved and the virtues at play (a character-based analysis). Finally, it also asks us to consider related moral values. You do an OK job here, but you bounce around a bit and while you end up discuss all three aspects, you don’t really seem to fully discuss the consequences, duties and do a character analysis of each option. You actually do a better job on the moral values as you get into the moral values of each of your options.
In the fourth step, you choose staying with the patient and calling for help. You conclude that will enable him to fulfill his Kantian duty to his patient while still trying to help the coworker.
The last step is what does Joe’s gut tell him about the decision? You conclude that there are risks with this option, but it was still the best choice overall. Many in the class choose an option of removing the patient and then going to help the coworker. That would violate his duty to his patient and his employer and it is questionable whether that is practical time wise, so this is clearly a tough call.
However, I might have spent some more time on step three, doing more of a compare and contrast review, but overall, you still do a good job following of analysis.
Overall, this is good, Rohit. You do a good job following the Five Step Process.
