There are times when all teachers need to be away from their students
There are times when all teachers need to be away from their students and will rely on a substitute to provide instruction and manage the classroom. When working with students with multiple disabilities, TBI, OHI, and orthopedic disabilities, there is a legal and ethical responsibility to provide detailed substitute plans and information about the students to ensure that their health and educational needs are being met.
You are mentoring a first-year special education teacher who works with students with orthopedic, OHI, TBI, and multiple disabilities in her self-contained classroom. She is preparing to attend a conference and has asked for assistance in creating a substitute folder. Create a video, digital presentation, handout, or sample substitute folder that you can use to instruct the mentee about how to best prepare for a substitute. The deliverable should address the following:
- Medical/health care needs commonly present in students with orthopedic, OHI, TBI, and multiple disabilities.
- Key building support staff members (paraprofessionals, school nurse, etc.) who typically work with these students, including a description of the types of support each of these team members provides.
- Related service providers (therapists, mobility and hearing specialists, etc.) who typically work with these students, including a description of the types of support each of these team members provides.
- Classroom routines students are accustomed to each day and an explanation of why each is important.
- Specific goals students are working on and the varied strategies that are typically used for engaging each student in a manner that best meets their unique needs.
- Documentation and data charts that are required as part of the daily routine and classroom communication with support staff, service providers, and parents/guardians.
Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
