This unit describes several elements and methods that can assist with understanding the content of academic texts. The role that reading plays in effective writing is fully explored; you will learn how to “read like a writer.” That is to say, as you read, you think critically about the text. Critical in this case doesn’t mean anything negative, per se; it means closely analyzing and evaluating the content of what you are reading. You are then able to apply these insights to your own writing. You will also learn a number of different strategies that can be used to help develop your comprehension of a text. These strategies include the SQ3R method, the Cornell note-taking method, and the creation of mind-maps. Finally, you will learn what it means to be part of a discourse community and its effect on your own academic writing.
