Learning Objective 2: Assessing the nature of scholarly research

Our second learning objective is to analyze the nature of scholarly research. To understand this we must understand our philosophical assumptions as researcher and the worldviews that we hold (ChrisFlipp, 2014). There are two different underlying philosophies used in research. One is positivism which is a nutshell says everything can be known through enough research. The world is definable. The other paradigm is interpretivism which holds to the idea that nothing is truly knowable. Everything is interpreted and influenced by the larger contexts in which the research lies. Within each is language are the terms that differentiate their philosophy. Positivism says “Validity” while Interpretivism says “Reliability” because validity is something that is impossible to be 100% certain of in any situation. Positivism says “Generalizability” while interpretivism says “Transferability” which means that nothing can be applied to the whole, but it can used in similar situations. This is just a short lesson in the language, but I hope it helps going forward.
