Organizational Issue Story
The organizational issue is the Behavior issues in Middle School. Yes, we all know that behavior is an issue in all schools but what are some things we can do to reduce those behaviors. PBIS ( Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives (Retrieved 2022 ) The issue affects all stakeholders in the school system because we are dealing with children that have behavior issues that some aren’t understanding that there are ways to reduce. What are those repeated behaviors that happen in the classroom (disrespect, dismissive and cursing). In the project we must find improvement to help stakeholders.
Context and Background
Behavior issues in middle school that tend to be a reoccurring issue. Dismissive, disrespect and vulgar language. Students deal with a lot outside of school that most won’t tell the administration, counselors are teachers to the embarrassment. The issue is how can we reduce these behaviors. The learning environment is very important. The administrators will have to re-evaluate how they’d handled behavior issues in middle school classes. The people that are affected the most will be the teachers and the students that are trying to learn. The behavior specialist at the school began to create Behavior contracts. The behavior contract consists of identifying the behavior, conference with students, parents, teachers and administrators. In the conference a behavior specialist explains if the contract is broken then the student will receive certain days home or receive ISS. The students that are learning or impacted the most because the teacher will have to control the learning environment again. When it comes to negotiation with the student and parent the administrators would need to be Stern with the consequence. The barriers that would stop the action plan from failing will be administrators not showing favoritism.
Existing Data
In the data chart, displays the 6th-7th graders at School XYZ. The blue represents the 6th graders and purple displays the 7th graders. In 6th grade, they had repeated students that would be dismissive, meaning doing what they wanted to do and not listening to the teacher. While 7th graders were very disrespectful to the teachers not caring about nothing but being class clowns. Similar for both would be vulgar language in and out of the classroom. Students would tend to say it and then say i am sorry knowing they shouldn’t say it at all.
According to NAESP, they conducted a survey below.
Counselors tracked disciplinary data and measured student and staff attitudes throughout the school year. The following survey results documented the fact that the program was working.
Interview Methodology The existing data help realize this issue that’s happening at every school. Knowing and observing other schools’ previous work at this cool handles differently. Based on that I interviewed a first year teacher and a second-year teacher to analyze how one handles classroom management. It’s important to see different perspectives as it relates to recurring behavior issues. The interviews were conducted through email with some straight to the point questions. They were conducted through email due to our different schedule throughout the day.
Data Analysis Methodology
After receiving the answers from the two teachers and asking them the behaviors they deal with daily dismissive, disrespect and vulgar language. While Tres Tres scribing while I knew nothing about it allowed me to analyze how much interviewing is important to the issue. Coding the interview was interesting and detailed to have a visual of the coding process. That coding process involves finding initial bits of data that are relevant to your topic, grouping those bits of data into broader categories, and then finally creating broader themes from the categories. ( Retrieved Capella University 2022).
Ethical Considerations
The way of checking the bias was the questions that were developed for them to answer. The way they were protected by telling them that this interview would not be said to anyone in a 7 minute straight of Team. The data was only sent to my email and not cc’d to anyone else. Results and Reflection
The themes allowed for me to understand how much administrators aren’t to focus on the behavior but what is the teacher doing. I don’t agree with that because as an administrator you should set the tone for the behavior in the school. Teachers want to be sure they are protected by the administration team. The PBIS is implemented in the classroom but for the older students they need more accountability activities. Theme 1: Dismissive Behavior, seeking Administration for help ( student). Theme 2: disrespectful behavior, in the classroom and disruption of the learning environment. Theme 3: Vulgar language, student just shouts out vulgar language with no apologies. Students get too comfortable with using the language.
The participants’ perspectives allowed me to view different types of behavior as it dealt with the different classroom management from the teachers. Both teachers feel like when it comes to certain students in the behavior they handle it differently. I learned through the interviews that the teacher with the least amount of years of experience needs more professional development when it comes to classroom management with certain behaviors. Through the interview I realize that Administration really needs to look at the behaviors distracting learning of others. Summary and Next Steps 8 The unanswered questions that should have been asked to the administrators more than the teachers. The next steps would be to ask the Administration some questions on how they deal with those behaviors. The problem of behavior issues and middle school should be evaluated based on how the school handles Behavior. Parents should consider things like that as well besides the letter grade. Most of the time you have those smart students that outweigh the students that don’t care about school.
