LITERATURE REVIEW
TASK
- Identify a major challenge or issue in one of the following sectors in New Zealand:
- health
- education (any level – early childhood, primary, secondary or tertiary)
- business
Check and confirm your focus with your lecturer before commencing research.
- Write a short literature review describing current research findings on this challenge or issue. Find at least 5 articles to review – they must all be scholarly articles – either from the library database or through google scholar.
Your literature review needs to cover the following points:
- What has research revealed about the causes of this challenge/issue?
- What has research revealed about the extent and seriousness of this challenge/issue?
- What have the researchers suggested as possible solutions to this challenge/essay?
REQUIREMENTS
- Literature Review length: 600-800 words.
- Sources must be referenced correctly both in your Literature Review and in the Reference list at the end.
- You should ensure your writing has as few errors as possible.
- Texts must be completed on a word processor
- Double space your writing
- Font: Calibri or Times New Roman, Size 12
- Include a header on each page with your full name, and student ID number. (Right aligned, font size 9).

OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE REVIEW STRUCTURE
- Introduction
- Define or identify the sector, and the challenge/issue of concern, thus providing a context for your review.
- Point out overall trends in what has been published about this challenge/issue (which you will discuss in more detail in the body paragraphs).
- Explain the organisation of the review; the order in which you will discuss different themes
- Body Paragraphs
- Group research studies and other types of literature ( reviews, theoretical articles, case studies, etc) according to common themes.
- Summarise individual studies or articles with as much or as little detail as each one deserves, remembering that length indicates significance.
- Synthesise the findings/conclusions of articles that have produced similar results.
- Indicate clearly with a topic sentence the focus of each paragraph, so that the reader is aware of which theme is being discussed.
- Conclusion
- Summarise the major themes of your review.
- Briefly evaluate the current state of research into this challenge/issue, and identify further research that needs to be done to provide answers to unresolved questions, and/or more data.
- Conclude with a brief evaluation (2-3 sentences) of the seriousness of this challenge and the effectiveness of any measures suggested to address it.
