Italy was as separated country by the time Niccolo Machiavelli started writing. The country was divided into collection of city states what had their rulers each. These rulers were power hungry always attempting to have supremacy of power of the other. In addition to this, Italy was a battle field of power-hungry men in French, Spanish and Germans together with Catholic Church which was under Pope who were as powerful as any other secular king in Europe.
