Communication and culture go hand in hand.
Culture as a System
Communication and culture go hand in hand. The way we talk is a reflection of our culture. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the hand gestures we use, the physical space we occupy, the personal artifacts keep in our homes are all part of our culture. Culture itself is difficult to define as we may be part of many cultures.
Culture is a learned system of behaviors that typifies a large group of people and includes their beliefs, values, and practices. It provides rules for living in society. Think about the traditions you practice during the holidays. Most likely those practices were passed down from generation to generation.
Let’s focus on culture being viewed as a system. It’s a system of interrelated parts, similar to a family or this class. If an event shakes up even a small part of the system, the rest of the system feels it. For example, war can completely change the structure of a system. Natural disasters can do the same. Any major event has the power to change a culture for a lifetime. Cultures are holistic and no change is isolated from the overall system.
