Building relationships with students and families so the learning continues

Building relationships with students and families so the learning continues at home allows students to make connections to new learning in all content areas. Understanding the need to invest in young children is important to maximize their future success and well-being.

Create three take-home book bags to develop the home/school connection for the same grade you focused on in your unit plan. Each book bag should be aligned to a selected children’s book and include an at-home activity that is family-friendly. The content and format of materials in the book bags should take into consideration diverse family backgrounds. These book bags are an opportunity to provide additional support to families to encourage them to further develop their child’s learning outside of the classroom.

Consider the unit plan you have just completed. What could you send home to parents that might continue the learning at home?

Create a one-page flyer for each book bag to provide the following information to parents:

The purpose of the bookbag
The selected book title.
An activity to complete using the book, with clear directions for the family. Consider integrating the arts into the activity.
A fun, simple way for families to provide you feedback on the activity. This could also incorporate the arts.
Minimum of 2-3 additional resources parents could access to assist with the book bag.
