Essay Assignment – For those of you who were able to attend the townhall with DSW/EWOC, Bernie Sanders, and the ALU organizers, I would love to hear your thoughts and comments after watching the you tube video. I also thought it would be worthwhile to perhaps even have a bit of whole class conversation about this organizing drive and the Starbucks drives we are seeing.
1. How did the ALU discussion relate to the course material on organizing?
2. Did you see discussion of the Budd model?
3. Does anything in that model explain the different outcomes in NYC versus Bessemer, AL?
4. How about in the Brofenbrenner and Hickey work? Why are we seeing so many successes for the Starbucks workers?
5. Did we see the Love, Hope, Saliency model in the Amazon organizing?
6. Finally, what are your thoughts about the efficacy of the traditional employer side union busting tactics? How did workers respond to these tactics? Would you have any advice for Amazon/Starbucks organizers and/or Amazon/Starbucks managers?
