Discussion: Lifespan development is a broad topic, covering multiple stages, theories, and critical issues. As we begin the course, do a search for 2 scholarly journal articles related to lifespan. Provide a brief description of these articles and how they relate to the topic of lifespan development as well as the textbook.

Jennifer Zasadny post:

Lifespan development is a study on how humans grow, adapt, and learn throughout their lives. The two articles reviewed focus primarily on humans entering the older stages of life (like retirement).

Prospective Memory Development Across the Lifespan by Zuber and Kliegel (2020) looks at and discusses how prospective memory (PM) affects individuals as they get older, and what steps can be taken to help increase one’s PM through different practices. PM are skills that “supports everyday functioning, autonomy, and well-being, particularly for the elderly” (Zuber & Kliegel, 2020). Our PM develops and increases throughout the course of our lives, starting in childhood and into adulthood; but then starts to go down as we grow older. One practice the article suggests helping older individuals is making a task-list of things they need to do that day. Writing things down helps ingrain the thought into our minds, and we are able to see it on the paper and easily repeat it to ourselves.

Rediscovering Meaning When Entering “Old Age”: A Counseling Case Study Based on a Lifespan Development and a Pluralistic Approach by Sarantakis (2020) explores what happens to an individual that is entering into retirement. Sarantakis (2020) states, “…research supports the hypothesis that older workers with high “work-role centrality” (in terms of their social identity) do experience what has been described as “retirement anxiety” when they leave their jobs.” Through counseling, retired individuals are able to learn and find new activities they can enjoy and figuring out what benefits them the most. This is called the “life review” or “lifeline exercise.” (Sarantakis, 2020) They can reflect on their pre-retired life and implement parts of it into their new lifestyle.
