Based on research and professional experience, I believe that a flexible leadership style is a better approach. In healthcare management, every day and every situation presents differently. A fixed approach can limit your ability to be creative in solving various challenges. What might be an appropriate approach today may be totally disastrous tomorrow.
Let\’s look at the workforce for example. As skilled nursing home operators, we are required to have a Registered Dietician(RD) on staff or contracted for at least 8 hours per week. In the past, we have required that the RD be present in the facility at least one day per week. Once COVID-19 began, the RD that we have on payroll is only able to work remotely due to having a spouse that is severely immunocompromised. Our team decided that it was within everyone\’s best interest that she be permitted to work remotely. Without the flexible approach, she would not have been able to continue her employment with us which may have had negative impacts on the organization and most importantly our patients. We had to change some of our communication strategies to ensure the needs of our patients were being met but overall, it has been a flexible and good approach.
