Understanding of group processes and how your communication styles and skills inhibit/facilitate effective group functioning

Small Group Communications Exam #1

The goal of this exam is for you to demonstrate an understanding of group processes and how your communication styles and skills inhibit/facilitate effective group functioning.  For this paper you will draw on your experiences from your large group project, in-class group projects, class material of Each Chapter 1-9, and your experiences of group processes and impressions.
You will demonstrate your understanding by using specific examples of your communication behavior (and its consequences) and linking them to course material from each chapter 1-9.  For example, you need to address issues of individual versus group goals, roles that you play, interpersonal needs, leadership, defensiveness and feedback responses, conflict management processes, group climate, and decision-making skills (and any other areas that you thought were particularly relevant to your interaction in groups).
The focus should be on how your communication affects the group process, how you used your knowledge to facilitate (or inhibit) effective group functioning, and an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses as a group member.
This paper will be graded based on the concreteness of your self-analysis.  For example, if you wanted to be a leader but don’t think you were, address why you were unable to assume a leadership role and what specific skills you will need to improve on.
There is no page limit to this paper, however, it should very complete and thorough.  It should be long enough to provide me with enough concrete information to analyze your knowledge of groups and how your group functioned.  It must be typed and double spaced.  It also MUST be free from spelling and grammatical mistakes.  With as many group members as you have there is NO acceptable excuse for not thoroughly proofreading your papers.  Grading will be based on depth on analysis, quality of writing, and concreteness of examples presented.
