In the discussion about fairness in today’s class, I brought up the example of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

In the discussion about fairness in today’s class, I brought up the example of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially that any solution to this conflict cannot be based on bargaining power where the stronger side dictates the term of surrender to the weaker side, but must instead be based on fairness and be seen as fair by both sides. If you were not in class, make sure to read the class notes on this topic (posted under the Files tab) to avoid making superficial and worthless comments.

In class, I ran out of time to poll all students about the position they would like the U.S. to take in this conflict. So, please answer the following question.

Is it in U.S. self-interest to back either side? (Unsupported answers will be considered worthless. Think logically and critically.)

Yes, the U.S. should back the Israelis 100% because they are our friends and allies, and God gave them this land.

Yes, the U.S. should back the Palestinians 100% because they have been unjustly dispossessed of their homeland and we stand for justice.

No, we should not entangle ourselves in a foreign conflict. But we should offer our services as honest and impartial peace brokers if it would help.

The official position of the U.S. government has, for more than 50 years already, given unwavering and unconditional support, backing and military assistance to Israel in this conflict. Does this coincide with your views of what is in U.S. self-interest? If not, you cannot currently vote to change this policy because there is a bipartisan Pro-Israel consensus in Washington among the political elite. This consensus is reinforced by a well-organized campaign of intimidation and “cancellation” against anyone who would dare to express a dissident opinion.

On how the “cancel” culture is threatening free speech, please read the open letter signed by a large number of artists and academics published last year in Harper’s MagazineA Letter on Justice and Open Debate (Links to an external site.).

On how the “cancel” culture is stifling debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, please read the following opinion piece: The Real Cancel Culture: Pro-Israel Blacklists(Links to an external site.)

How do you feel about \”Cancel culture\” and particularly about how it is skewing U.S. policy regarding Israel/Palestine? As always, I am asking you to write a thoughtful comment reflecting a serious effort at critical thinking on these issues and to engage in debates with the other students.
