You are a technologist working for temporary agency.

You are a technologist working for temporary agency. This weekend you have taken a job in a small rural hospital. You will be the only technologist present for the next two days at this facility. You will be spending the night at the hospital and they will call you if your services are needed.

When you arrive at the hospital, the chief technologist gives you a brief tour of the department and shows you the room you will sleep in during your stay. She explains to you that there will be no one on back up call because the hospital is so small it will not be necessary. You are a bit uneasy about this, but say nothing. The chief technologist leaves and you are now on your own. You continue taking a look around the department and you begin to feel more at ease. After taking a look around, you decide to go check out the room you will be staying in.

For the next five hours, no one calls. Around 10 PM, a nurse calls your room and says they need a stat portable chest in room 503. You proceed to the department and quickly realize that you have no idea where the portable is. You begin to look around and find it. To your surprise, it is a brand new piece of equipment. Attached to the portable is a note. The note says: Please use the portable phototimer for all chest and abdomen exams, per Dr. Dorsey. You notice something with the portable that you assume is the phototimer.

You proceed to the patient’s room. Upon arrival, you tell the patient that you will be performing a chest x-ray. The patient does not respond, but seems to be awake. You decide to speak louder, but still no response. You leave the room and go take a look at the chart. Upon reading the chart, you find that the patient is blind and deaf. You return to the patient’s room to try to complete the exam. Not long after you walk in the room, you hear someone yelling very loudly. This person is cursing and asking for the technologist on call to come out immediately. You can’t believe your bad luck.
