The company I work for manages senior living communities. With the management of the company comes with waste management. There are several different types of waste. The first is food waste. In the current environment, staffing has provided to be difficult, which in turn has led to hiring employees who may not have as much knowledge, but are trainable. Food wastage can happen when too much food is purchased and goes bad before it is able to be used or too much food is cooked the unused portion goes to waste (Newlife, 2021). In order to eliminate the over purchasing, it is important to keep a stock record so that purchasing of product that is already on hand is not happening. In order to reduce the over preparation of food, it is important to anticipate the demand accurately. It is important to know who is out of the building as well as dietary restrictions of the residents in order to better anticipate the amount to prepare.
A second aspect of waste in senior living communities is waiting. We are staffed with care givers 24/7, but the demands during the residents’ sleeping hours is not as great as the demands during the wake hours. Although there is care to be provided at night, there is more down time. In order to eliminate the down time at night, other tasks can be assigned, such as housekeeping and laundry. This would eliminate the need for an additional employee during the day to take care of those tasks and still provide the staffing at night to care of the residents.
