Select a grade, pre-K to Grade 3. Create five literature-based learning centers for developing literacy skills. Choose five genres from the following list and create one learning center for each of the selected genres:
Picture books
Poetry
Fables and fairy tales
Traditional literature
Modern fantasy
Science fiction
Realistic fiction
Historical fiction
Non-fiction (informational text, biography, history, etc.)
Create a 150-250 word handout with a description of each center’s learning activity for the volunteer who will be the facilitator. At least one learning center must include a teacher-centered intervention, and at least one must incorporate the children’s use of technology in a collaborative way.
In each description, include the following:
Specific learning objectives
List of materials to be used, including the work of literature selected and the criteria used to select it
Directions for how a volunteer would facilitate the activity in a respectful, positive, supportive manner
One differentiation strategy for students below grade level and one enrichment strategy for students above grade level
Three formative questions the volunteer can ask students while they are facilitating the activity to monitor student progress
A summative assessment to be administered at the end of the activity to assess learning
Write a 100-250 word reflection discussing how the learning centers appropriately modify instruction to meet each child’s learning needs and promote positive outcomes. How does collaborating with students and families promote a safe, positive learning environment of openness, mutual respect, positive relationships, and supportive interactions? How will this inform your future professional practice?
