Exploratory Essay on Riot Grrrl Movement
This assignment is a four to five page (1200 to 1500 word) paper that will require at least two outside sources. This assignment will require some perspective or guiding point, but won’t necessarily require an explicit or directive thesis. Your paper should possess some sort of purpose, and follow a line of inquiry, but you don’t need to come out with a directive thesis, like"; Frat culture could be considered responsible for the prevalence of rape on college campuses" or "Surprisingly, professional gamers in North America and Southeast Asia have lower than average rates of obesity." The work you put into this essay will eventually build towards your critical research essay, which will require an arguable thesis like the two above, but you’d likely have trouble effectively proving such a thesis in this paper.
Instead, you’ll want to conduct an investigative analysis, wherein you identify an interesting quality or trend in a subculture that you want to investigate further, and you’ll attempt to make the potential value or interest of that line of inquiry clear to your readers using your sources, and some general information on the subculture you investigate. Think of your paper as a response to a question you have. You could ask: "Do Freegans end up hurting homeless populations in areas that they populate heavily?" or "Are Goths less likely to give to charity than other people?" You don’t need to put out an answer to this question.
