Religious Diversity

Religious persecution may shield itself under the guise of a mistaken and over-zealous piety.

—Edmund Burke

Burke\’s quote speaks to the tendency of individuals, communities, and societies to practice religious discrimination in the name of their own beliefs.

Religious discrimination is just as present today as when Burke gave his speech in the 18th century.

A 2011 Pew Research report indicated that instances of religious discrimination actually rose in 26 countries in 2009 and remained the same in 168 countries. (Claubough, 2011)This week\’s readings provide an historical and academic perspective on religious discrimination and relay the stories of individuals who have faced religious discrimination. You will analyze the connections between religion and privilege, based upon the readings and other examples. Then you will describe the intersectionality of religion with gender, race, and class and analyze the social worker\’s role in responding to these intersectionalities.

Discussion: Religion and PrivilegeFor citizens in some countries, religious oppression is common and long standing. While freedom of religion is guaranteed in the U.S., religious intolerance still exists. According to the Equal Opportunity Employment commission, the number of lawsuits filed for religious discrimination doubled between 2000–2010 (Pledger, 2011).

Social workers must be alert for the complex ways that religious privilege functions. By creating an awareness of the privilege given to some while marginalizing others, social workers can understand how this bias impacts their clients.
