The first significant challenge in the dissertation process is choosing a dissertation topic. This choice determines how long it will take to complete the research process. For most doctoral students, it is a hard decision, mainly because of the uncertainty surrounding it. The student must think about if it has already been adequately researched and is manageable in scope. To know whether it has been researched or essential to the field, you must first immerse yourself in the literature base. Dissertations rely on literature because when the topic has been studied before, it easier to present arguments, expand on them, and conclude your thesis. Shona McCombes (2019) said that reading different articles will allow you to narrow down the topic and get more specific. If there’s already a lot of research and a strong consensus on your topic, it will be more challenging to justify the relevance of your work. But you should make sure there is enough literature on the topic to provide a solid basis for your research.

Choosing a dissertation topic is the most critical step in one’s doctoral journey. Of course, the topic that is chosen should be of high interest to the researcher. This will help ensure that the researcher stays focused, on task, and lead to its completion. Once the topic is selected, the next step in to review the literature and research that is available. The literature should consist of not only current studies that have been done, but also past studies to give the researcher an in-depth analysis of what has been done in their field of study. By familiarizing themselves with past and current literature, the researcher gains insight and knowledge in developing credible literature reviews.
Taking a step back, literature reviews are the bones of a study that holds it all together. Without a credible and thorough literature review the whole study and the researcher can lose all credibility. Randolph (2009) states that if the literature review is flawed, the remainder of the dissertation may also be viewed as flawed because to perform and produce significant research, they must first be able to understand and analyze the literature from within their field. Relying on the literature available and critically analyzing it, allows the researcher to examine any limitations, that they can then address, and form a cohesive and focused topi and thesis for their own research.
The importance of the literature review cannot be overstated. The role of a researcher is not just to conduct their own research but also review what has already been done so they can not only learn from any past mistakes or limitations, but also form their own study with a clear vision and process.

The topic of my study is to research the hesitancies oof middle school teachers (grades 6-8th) in following schoolwide PBIS models for students receiving special education services. As I have been conducting my research, the various studies that I have read mentions those hesitancies for teachers in all grade levels, none have conducted or addressed those hesitancies in an in-depth manner, nor have they discussed why those hesitancies occur.
The studies I have read, so far, have minimally addressed preconceived notions about students in special educations from some educators and how they feel these students would not benefit from being exposed to PBIS interventions and supports. These notions are supported by formal PBIS trainings being delivered by school districts that often leave out this demographic of students. I want to focus my research to address these hesitations with middle school teachers specifically as they appear to be the most hesitant, especially those teachers that have a high number of special education students within their general education classroom setting.
Lentz (2020) states simply, regarding topic selection, is to visualize what the future can look like and what can support the researcher’s passion and career ambitions. What I hope to address with my study, are the insights and viewpoints if teachers and make their voices heard. In doing so, I hope to provide educational leadership members with this information so that they can address these hesitancies accordingly in their district training thus leading to an increase in teacher buy-in and implementation fidelity with similar models and programs.

Hello classmates,The topic chosen for my field of study is still not specific. I am still looking in the area of healthcare with a subtopic of leadership styles and the other is looking at how patients are engaged with clinic operations (health care) through governing boards or leadership teams to improve quality of care. Most of the research read indicate a lack of patient representation in leadership teams such as patient advocacy committees or on governing boards, if the hospital or clinics function with health boards.
Patients need to have voice in decision making to ensure they are provided quality care. Patients can advocate for change in how services are provided (e.g. appointment process, emergency room intake). As Native Americans, we have been placed on the back burner for health care. We struggle within our own health care processes where it takes about 45 minutes to an hour before a patient is seen by the provider. I am not sure if this is the same problems seen elsewhere like in a private health system. I’ve looked for topics pertaining to Indian Health Service studies but have not come up with anything. If you have any links to share I would appreciate it.
Lentz (2020) states the researcher will use the literature review to establish evidence of what has been discovered and what remains to be found, discuss findings from previous work, trends and themes that may have emerged from the past studies.
