The movie is set at a catholic church in 1964 in Bronx, New York. It opens with Father Flynn being in a jovial mood while giving sermon. The sermon is based on doubt’s nature, and notes that just like faith it also has a unifying force. Aloysius Beauvier who is the principal of the attached school notes that Father Flynn might have discovered unusual behavior hence deciding to preach about doubt. She decides to also sermons fellow nuns on doubt and asks them to be careful in order to note doubtful behaviors in the future.
