1. According to Skakni (2017), not all doctoral learners who receive high marks in their coursework successfully complete their doctoral programs. As such, an “A” grade in RES-815 does not necessarily lead to an approved dissertation signed by the Dean of the College of Doctoral Studies. It will require a combination of skill sets beyond academic success that will contribute to growing as a learner and a scholar. It will require learners to work not only independently but also collaboratively, partnering with residency faculty and the dissertation committee. How can the adjustment to and mindset of the independent researcher contribute to working productively as a professional with your committee?
2. Looking back over the duration of the course, how has your perception of the role of researcher changed in the last eight weeks? Looking ahead, how will you build time into your schedule to work independently to continue to develop the necessary behaviors needed to navigate a doctoral program and to successfully complete a dissertation research project? Moving forward into the next course, what is one disposition you would like to incorporate into your research practice? Why? (This response does not require research support.)———-
3.The adjustment as a researcher should have the understanding that nothing will go according to plan. A researcher should be able to maintain his/her composure and try not to let the challenges and situations get the best of them. Yes, there will be disagreements and misunderstandings among members of the committee, but as professionals we should be able to handle those disagreements and misunderstandings as adults. A researcher must be able to experiment with different systematic methods before finding the right fit. In the scholarly journal, adjustment disorders: a research gap analysis, discusses adjustment disorders, the most commonly diagnosed group of mental health disorders among active-duty service members. Adjustment disorders have received little research attention, leaving many gaps in our understanding of these disorders. Several systematic methods have been developed for identifying and prioritizing research gaps (Morgan, Kelber, Workman, Beech, Wilson, Edwards-Stewart, Belsher, Evatt, Otto, Skopp, Bush, & Campbell, 2021).A researcher’s mindset should be to think outside the box. There are a lot of research that has been done, but the question a researcher should ask is, what has not been done? How can I, the researcher fill the gap between what has already been done to what has not been done? In the scholarly journal, how the relational structure of universities influences research and developments, confirms that there is a research gap in the literature regarding the ways that academic institutions can promote the generation of patents. So, if there is a gap in within the institutions then I am sure there is a gap in research within the academic community (Santini, Faccin, Balestrin, & Martins, 2021).
4. The doctoral programs have changed over the years. Skakni (2018) indicated doctoral programs, in the past, focused on academic performance and intellectual abilities, admission scores were used to predict graduation, and sociodemographic and personality characteristics. These factors either hindered the PhD students to complete the doctoral program or they persevered to finish the program. It seems now the programs are leaning toward looking at experiences and interactions in their daily lives as factors to become accepted in a doctoral program. Doctoral students are provided learning stages like on the job training techniques to adjust to the system. I’ve always been one to earn the “A” in my classes. Receiving a grade less than an “A” tells me I am not productive. All the research articles read for RES-815 state that doctoral students should not look for the “A” but should learn to become independent to work towards increased acceptance of feedback, collaboration with peers, faculty, and committee. This is my first doctoral class so I feel that I will continue to grow as a learner.
5.First and foremost, I want to acknowledge God because without Him I would not have made it this far. My perception has not changed that much. Coming into this program, I had an idea of what I would be doing, but during this eight-week course has opened my eyes to a better and broader understanding of my role and responsibility as a researcher. Looking ahead as far as time, I am blessed to say that all I have is time. If I am not getting ready for a bodybuilding competition which is about two times out of the year, and training clients depending on their schedule, I will have more than enough time to dedicate and to be focused on my dissertation. The ability to juggle responsibilities effectively is a life skill; time management is a constant and responsibilities change over time (Schlemlper, 2011). I come from a military culture where everything I did in the Army was regimented. I have implemented this program into my regiment, so as of now I do not see any reasons as to why time would be a factor. I also have incorporated Murphy’s Law because I know there may be some things that may occur that I will have to adapt or make adjustments to. I am confident to say, I am ready for this journey. My plan is to enjoy the journey, but more so looking forward to the destination and the man that I will become after this is all over.
Moving forward into my next course, my disposition will be to make sure that I implement all the feedback that my instructor from this class provided to me, make sure that the APA citations are formatted correctly, and most importantly be more detailed by providing more substance to my research papers.
6.Looking back over the duration of the course, how has your perception of the role of researcher changed in the last eight weeks?
I have to say my perception has changed in terms of narrowing the area of focus and ensure your topic is feasible. I also understand there has to be consistency when identifying data for my topic. Often I have this mindset that what I type in the search bar, is what is going to come. However, that is less than accurate. Patience is key. Understanding that there is a pattern to the process is part of the role of the researcher.
Looking ahead, how will you build time into your schedule to work independently to continue to develop the necessary behaviors needed to navigate a doctoral program and to successfully complete a dissertation research project?
I have already devoted the next few years to this program. I plan to do all I can do when I am on Christmas break. But for now, I am devoted. I intend to develop the action plan therefore I can have an intentional and strategic plan in place. I’m not worried about my involvement in the program or time management. What concerns me is my ability to enjoy life and maintain self-care. I truly believe as long as I manage my time efficiently I will be fine but I will need support so I don’t stray from the course.
Moving forward into the next course, what is one disposition you would like to incorporate into your research practice? Why?
Grand Canyon University (2020) identified 10 strategic dispositions for doctoral learners throughout the process. I found that many of the dispositions play a significant role to the learner. The two that particularly caught my attention focused on the ethical research and self-responsibility. Ultimately, I have to commit to ensuring that I am fully committed to this program and have a strategic plan in place when I feel disconnected and challenged that I can reboot especially when there is no one there to help encourage and motivate me.
