The researcher takes a special focus on the impact of substance abuse on mental health. A key focus is on the impact of marijuana use in the Caribbean. The issue of marijuana abuse is particularly important to the Caribbean as it has a focus on the vulnerable populations in the region especially adolescents. The cultural norm in society is a key element that encourages the use of marijuana as well as the consideration of legalization in many areas. The research finds that substance abusers are also exposed to other aspects such as physical and verbal abuse. These aspects place a stress level on the psychological well-being of an individual leading to alterations in mental well-being.

The researchers have a key objective to investigate the correlation of disorders as they relate to the use of alcohol and other drugs to the presence of symptoms of mental disorders. The researchers have a focus on 128 users who are positioned in a psychosocial care center in Sao Paulo. Using a univariate and multiple linear regression model, the researchers find that the symptoms of internalizing and externalizing symptoms are significant. The key symptoms that relate to crime and violence are found to be significant. A key conclusion from the research is the high relationship that exists between alcohol use and severe mental health symptoms and crime. The socially vulnerable environment of alcohol and drug abusers is a key aspect that is pointed out in the research that should be considered for further analysis.
Booth, B. M., Walton, M. A., Barry, L. K., Cunningham, R. M., Chermack, S. T., Blow, F. C. (2012). Substance Use, Depression and Mental Health Functioning in Patients Seeking Acute Medical Care in an Inner-City ED. The Journal of Behavioral Health Services & Research, 38(3): 358-372. DOI: 10.1007/s11414-010-9227-6
The researchers have a focus on the investigation of the co-occurring substance abuse and mental health conditions as well as other medical disorders. The study has a focus on over 5640 emergency department patients that are aged 19 to 60 years. The location of the study is an inner-city hospital. The patients chosen have behavioral health issues. About 23% are found to suffer from major depression and have average mental health functioning. There is 15% who are found to have alcohol and other substance dependencies over a period of 12 months. Comorbidity of dependency and major depression is found to be high. The key findings suggest the difficulty that arises when treating the patients as the behavioral health conditions complicate diagnosis and treatment. There is a need for an appropriate treatment strategy for patients found to have mental health conditions and substance abuse in emergency departments.

Treatment of people with a diagnosis of multiple mental disorders is a difficult process that looks at the integration of treatment approaches. The complexity in health care treatment arises due to a need to treat mental health illness and substance dependency disorder which are often highly difficult. The researchers have a key focus on the exploration of the impact of non-integrated care of both mental health and substance abuse dependency on the occurrence of relapses on patients. The study has a key finding that the correlation between concurrent treatment and the number of relapses does not have a key interconnection. However, there is a key realization that mental illness co-occurs with substance abuse. In this way, there is a key suggestion to social workers to develop mechanisms to effectively treat clients with co-occurrence of mental illness and substance abuse.
Wani, M. A. (2016). Impact of Drug Addiction on Mental Health. Journal of Mental Disorders and Treatment, 2:1. DOI: 10.4172/2471-271X.1000110
The researchers define mental health as the adjustment to have maximum effectiveness, satisfaction, happiness, and socially-acceptable behavior while having the appropriate ability to face and accept the realities of life. The excessive use of drugs has a large effect on the mental health of an individual. The study looks at 60 individuals that are randomly selected. 50% of the participants are adolescents and 50% are adults with each participant group having an equal division of males and females. The mental health of the addicts is measured using a P.G.I. health questionnaire. The ANOVA two-way analysis of variance is used for the data analysis. The results indicate that adults and female adolescent addicts show to have better mental health as compared to male adolescents. Additionally, age is found to be a significant factor affecting the well-being of individuals.
Poudel, A., Sharma, C., Gautam, S., Poudel, A. (2016). Psychosocial problems among individuals with substance use disorders in drug rehabilitation centers, Nepal. Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy, 11(28). https://substanceabusepolicy.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13011-016-0072-3
There is a link among various short- and long-term negative effects of substance abuse. There are physical and psychological issues including the loss of an ability to adequately interact with the social circle including family, friends, and society. The study has the aim of identifying the psychosocial challenges and the associated factors that exist among individuals with substance abuse disorders. Using a cross-sectional research design, various substance abuse rehabilitation centers in Nepal are studied. The sampling technique used is the probability proportionality to size sampling to identify participants diagnosed with drug abuse disorder with no withdrawal symptoms in rehabilitation centers. The participants are aged above 15 years. The research finds that individuals experience a significant impact on psychological and social wellbeing. More so, individuals that use injecting drugs as well as having an initiation from an early stage in life in substance abuse experience far worse psychosocial issues.
Schulte, T. M., Hser, Y-I. (2017). Substance Use and Associated Health Conditions throughout the Lifespan. Public Health Reviews, 35(2). DOI: 10.1007/BF03391702
To understand substance abuse disorders, the researchers recognize the need to have an understanding of age-appropriate strategies to deal with the issue. The researchers have an outlook on various literature to understand the various substance abuse effects across various life stages. There is a key realization that all age groups are at risk of overdose, injury, and key psychological effects especially suicide. Adolescents are seen to have a high likelihood of being engaged in vehicular accidents while adults are seen to have a higher risk of dangerous falls. However, adults are found to have the highest rate of medical conditions such as sexually transmitted infections, heart disease, and cancer. Additionally, mental health conditions are seen to be most prominent among adults especially bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, antisocial personality disorder. Adults are majorly affected due to having prolonged exposure to substance abuse which has an effect on serious health conditions.
Jackson, R. D. (2019). Female Prescription Drug Abuse. The Encyclopedia of Women and Crime. https://doi.org/10.1002/9781118929803.ewac0164
One of the key issues affecting young women is the use of prescription medication. More so, nonmedical prescription drug abuse in females is seen to have an upward trajectory and is quickly becoming a concern for public health. Women are seen to have a low rate of delinquency as well as other substance abuse types. However, women are also seen to have greater risks of prescription drug misuse and abuse. There is a key suggestion that women are seen to have more sensitivity to pain and suffer from anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. These aspects place women at a high risk of misusing prescription medication especially pain relievers especially as a form of self-medication and relief. In this way, the development of mental health conditions is seen to have an impact on promoting drug abuse among women.

One of the key factors that are considered by the authors as critical to the successful recovery of drug abuse is self-esteem formation. Self-esteem is seen to have increased success in the rehabilitation programs as well as preventing the ongoing relapse process. Being that self-esteem is not a key priority in rehabilitation programs, there is a key determinant of drug abuse status and psychological states of clients. The aim of the research study was to explore the formation of self-esteem in patients in rehabilitation for drug abuse in Bangli Mental Health Hospital. The key findings find that there is the importance of self-esteem in the development of a rehabilitation program. The qualitative study through in-depth interviews shows that various factors such as family, peers, life experience, skills, spirituality, parental history, and the social and physical environments affect the self-esteem of an individual and the consequent successful recovery.Czeisler, M. DOI: 10.15585/mmwr.mm6932a1
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is a key factor that is associated with various mental health challenges that affect mortality and morbidity as well as mitigation of other conditions in society. Some of the key effects are on mental health including the development of anxiety disorder and depressive disorder. There is an increased case of development of the mental health conditions in the US which was recorded especially in the months of April to June 2020 as compared to similar previous periods. In assessing the mental health, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation in the pandemic period there was an increased prevalence of the conditions. Initiation and increased substance abuse to cope with the COVID-19 stress were seen to increase. Among 18 to 24-year-old participants, there was an increase in using substances and increased mental health conditions of anxiety and depression during the same period. As such, stressful situations leading to mental health disturbance are seen to have an impact on drug abuse.
