Respond to Oliver post .After reading the WHO growth standards recommended for infants and children, how would you compare this with the adult general survey and measurement chapter 9 Chapter?

According to the World Health Organization, the use of standard growth charts for children less than two years in the United States are used to monitor growth. On the other hand, the 2000 CDC growth reference in the United States is used to monitor development in children from age 2 to 20 years. It has been recommended for providers in primary care settings by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The CDC uses individual charts for genders in children from 2 to 20 years, and each unique chart checks for BMI and stature for age and weight (CDC, 2016).

Unlikely Jarvis, 2020 mentions how the general survey and measurement in adults are focused on finding the body mass index as a guide of the right height and weight and an indicator of obesity or malnutrition. According to Jarvis, it is appropriate to mention that BMI indicates the combination of weight and height but does not include muscle mass. BMI can be calculated using a formula (weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiply by 703 or weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared).  BMI is more effective in adults; however, it is not effective in children or older adults. BMI allows to compare the previous weight with the current weight in an individual, and discussion of the risk factors like cardio metabolic can help the person (Jarvis, 2020).

As a registered nurse, what are the important aspects of clinical nursing you had learned from chapter 9 and chapter 10 compared to your experience when you were a student nurse? Jarvis 2020 describes in chapters 9 and 10 the general survey, measurement, and vital signs. The general survey covers the physical appearance, body structure, mobility, and behavior. As a nurse in the present, I definitely can put in practice what is described, now I have to deal with my patients, and nursing skills need to be utilized. I have to focus more on paying attention to the details with the patients, I have to manage the time with my patients, and I have to use critical thinking for different situations.

In my experience as a student nurse, I remember using the same assessment tools for the general survey and vital signs, but I felt I could rely upon an experienced nurse since I was learning. Critical thinking wasn’t used as it is used now since I have to deal by myself with patients. I can honestly say that having better communication skills is performed now than when I was studying. The practice improves the skills.
