As crime scene investigation is crucial to gathering vital evidence, the most critical factor in crime scene awareness is health and safety procedures. They are the essential issues to be considered when arriving at crime scenes and should remain a priority throughout the process to prevent exposure to health and safety hazards. At the crime scene, it is essential to suppress health and safety hazards before starting the investigation. Getting exposed to hazardous objects, biological materials, or toxic chemicals may lead to various mishaps. A few examples are getting exposed to poisonous fumes, undischarged explosives, electrical risks, body fluids that may lead to the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening infections, etc.

The most critical factor in evidence acquisition is applying all laws and regulations regarding evidence handling, collection, and storage. When these laws and regulations are not used as guidelines, the gathered evidence could be deemed inadmissible in court, which can negatively affect the investigation. In evidence acquisition, one must ensure that the collected data is stored on an unused storage device or has been forensically cleaned to prevent inaccuracy, alteration, or doubts to evidence integrity.

To preserve data once acquired for evidence is to use the chain of custody. It is the most critical process of evidence documentation used to assure the court of law that the evidence gathered is authentic from the crime scene. It helps to prove that the evidence has been preserved and has not been contaminated by unauthorized personnel. Without the use of the chain of custody, gathered proof\’s integrity cannot be proven in court.
