This are my first notes on the topic, please make sure to build the second assignment based on the first one. Clinical Psychology: Severe Depression There are several types of disorders that can be extremely risky if not treated from an early stage. One of such disorders is severe depression. Severe depression is a major psychological condition whose symptoms include being pervasive, in low moods, having a low self-esteem and loss of interest in exciting activities among other signs. Severe depression is a serious disorder that needs to be carefully handled. This is because it may lead to death. In the case under review, there is a family that has several of its members suffering from severe depression. From the case, it is evident that severe depression is a risky condition; it led to the death of Joe’s uncle through suicide. This means that if the disorder is not handled in good time and carefully, it may have grave effects. Severe depression is an interesting topic to me because I have previously seen one of my aunts suffer from it and it has also personally affected me. She was in denial and she changed from the jovial person she was to a cold and quiet person. It is important to understand the disorder in order to help others who show signs of it in the future. In addition, some people suffer from the disease without even being aware of it, and it may get out of hand with time. Severe depression is a type of a depressive disorder which is generally a chronic medical condition that is recurrent and highly prevalent. It can be caused by genetic factors or exposure to situations like childhood trauma, loss or grief among others. The world health organization classifies this disorder as one of the top ten causes of premature death and disability in the world. This is a condition that is highly likely to affect people who are divorced or separated or widowed (McIntyre & Nathanson, 2010). For example, in the case study, one of the causes of Joe’s disorder is the fact that he was divorced. There are several psychological ways of treating severe depression. They include positive psychology, counseling, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy and cognitive behavior therapy among others. The psychological treatments present an alternative to medical treatment or they are used together. Some people are of the opinion that a person suffering from severe depression should not be on medication. This is because the medication may be wrong or not in the right dosage, and it may not be effective immediately (Thomas & Hersen, 2010). From the discussion, severe depression may have solemn effects on the patient. Both medical and psychological methods should be used to contain the disorder. It is also important for people to understand the symptoms of the disorder so that an individual may get help before the condition becomes severe or unstoppable. References McIntyre, R.
