Things to include: Thesis: [Africa’s direct impact on Europe, more specifically the Moors conquering the Iberian Peninsula.] Where the term Moor originates from and how it gained its prominence is a highly debated topic. The term is agreed to have originated from the Latin term Mauri, meaning someone who was from the Berber tribe. However, when the term was first coined and by who is a debated topic by many scholars. Some scholars believe that the term originates from Romans that were in contact with people from the province of Mauretania, or present day Algeria and Morocco. Other scholars believe that the term became synonymous with those that were Arab or Muslim, such as in the use of Shakespeare’s play Othello. In this essay I will discuss the Moors conquering the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle ages, the effect of the Moorish presence in the Iberian peninsula as well as the end of the Moorish rule in the Iberian Peninsula in the 12th century. Body Paragraph #1: Introduction or arrival in the Iberian Peninsula/ Time period- mid to late 700s A.D. to 1200s (?) During the Middle Ages Defining Moors- The term Moor and the origins of those that are considered Moors is a contested topic. The term Moore can mean a person who is from the Middle East or a person who is from Northern Africa, typically one who is Muslim. The Moors ruled or dominated in the Iberian peninsula until the mid 12th century (?).The Moors were driven out of the Iberian Peninsula by King Alfonso Henriques of Portugal. In 1212, European armies drove out and destroyed the Almohad army and eventually ended the Moorish influence in the Iberian Peninsula.
