A focus on building brands has produced many strong, high value brands like Apple, Google, Nike, Coca Cola, etc. These brands command respect and loyalty. Many countries in the Far East – notably China – are accused of counterfeiting reputed brands (think about prestige brands like Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Remy Martin, etc.). While this is culturally unacceptable to Western economies like the US and Europe, this is culturally acceptable in China and the Far East. They reason that if a new product / brand is good for people then its use should not be restricted and everyone should have access to the product at low cost. Thus charging a premium for its use (as brands often do) is not right. It is perfectly acceptable to copy the product and make it available to others for their consumption at a low cost.
