Czechia Hofstede Model
Walmart needs to have a thorough idea of the Hofstede model of culture to manage its employees across different cultural dimensions. The model includes power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity, and long-term vs. short-term orientation (Cascio & Arguinis, 2019, p. 397-398).
The Czechs will be inclined to avoid uncertainty. They are considered a structured culture that typically functions by bureaucratic level with coordination versus uncertainties. Czechs are also low in innovation as a culture, so they will prefer to do what they know works rather than exploring uncertain situations (World, 2010).
Their comfort with bureaucratic style organizations influences their propensity to utilize power distance. They are comfortable with bureaucratic leveling of authority with a clear structure of power (World, 2010).
Czechs will have high regard for individualism, as they are generally autonomous. They are a culture that thrives on healthy relationships and considers the strength of their connections to measure how well they can collaborate with others. However, they are also a majority non-religious country and a country where individualism is typical (World, 2010).
Czechia’s culture is mostly masculine. It is an equal gender country where women have all the same rights and opportunities to start careers as men; however, they typically make smaller wages for the same position as men. Also, they culturally are typically staying at home mothers versus working women (World, 2010). The culture is more known for being severe and to the point versus modest or timid. They are high on performance orientation, as the culture strives for educational excellence and encourages sports competition, both of which require higher levels of egoism, which supports masculinity.
Czechs will be somewhat future-oriented, as they typically avoid uncertainty, so they would preferably be prepared for the future.
Impact on Human Capital Management
When expanding to the Czech Republic, Walmart needs to consider the power distance, individualism, masculinity, long-term vs. short-term orientation, and uncertainty avoidance of the region. It can then understand the candidates’ potential motivation, leadership, and organization behaviors from those regions (Cascio & Arguinis, 2019, p. 435).
Training and development should focus on the development of everyone, specifically to their needs and learning capabilities. Their culture’s nature will allow them to learn most effectively with catered training methods towards individuals. Apprenticeships would be the most effective training and development method, as it focuses on one individual and establishes a trusting relationship with the mentor. Czechs hold relationships to a high value, so they will effectively learn under a mentor. Apprenticeships will provide Czechs a long-term oriented Czechs will expect continual development support from Walmart and thrive on the support for bettering themselves for future roles.
Performance management should be done on an individual basis versus a team basis. Although teams shall be evaluated and rated just as each employee will be, Walmart needs to use individual performance feedback as the leading platform for employee performance management. Czechs are individualistic and masculine, with a drive to perform for self-developing reasons. The feedback must deliver specific feedback to the employees of their strengths and rewards them as deserved (Cascio & Arguinis, 2019, p. 435-447).
