Different from evidence-based practice, which applies specific types of research to guide practice, practice-based research and data generated outside of the conduct of clinical trials, or what is also referred to as real-world evidence, starts with practice as its focus of inquiry. Its purpose is to use existing or “present” data (practice notes, observations, organizational and institutional policy statements, electronic health records, and so on) to create knowledge that generates a complex understanding of practice from which new and creative strategies can emerge.
Identify a practice issue or problem and develop a plan for practice-based research. Then develop an examined practice design that includes all elements of this model.
