1- My name is Marlys Oliver. I am currently working as a Registered Nurse Breast Health Specialist at a breast center. I work side by side with radiologists assisting them with breast biopsies procedures and other interventional radiologists duties. My health carrier began while I was living in Cuba, my home country. There, I attended the Carlos J. Finlay Medical Science Institute that later helped me with my studies and future carrier as a health professional. After I came to the United States, I registered at the International Institute for Health Care Professionals where I successfully graduated as a Registered Nurse.
My mission statement as Registered nurse is to assist all patients with compassion and empathy no matter their religion, gender, age, nationalities or disability. I personally believe that everybody should be treated with the same equality and respect.
My personal and professional goal is to provide ongoing community service to those in need of medical assistance. I intend to commit myself to lifelong learning because I believe that education continues for as long as you are in the nursing profession.
One of my skills is the ability to provide direct care to all age patients especially in the outpatient care. I always make sure to keep good nursing ethic and legal knowledge on nursing practice. I stand out assisting patients during pre and post procedures. Establishing a good communication and organizational skills are also one of my priorities as a nurse.
Spending time with my family is the most important thing for me. I love shopping and going to the beach. I also enjoy dancing and singing to karaoke. Despite general opinion that working may be stressful and time consuming, for me, my job is one of my favorite hobbies.
2- After reading chapter 1 of Global Health 101 and according to Skolnik(2020), there have been important progress in health worldwide in the last 50 years. It mentions that the death rate of children younger than 5 years of age fell from 148 deaths per 1000 children to less 65 death per 1000 children. The average life expectancy has also increased from 40 years to 69 years in developed countries which is a great improvement. Smallpox was eradicated saving thousands of lives from this infectious disease. Polio was nearly eliminated and along with the vaccine, now it can prevented since a young age. Great progress has been made in the reduction of burden of vaccine-preventable diseases in children and parasitic infections such as Guinea worm.
While there has been much progress and improvement during the past decades, there are still very important health challenges that remain present and affect society at a great scale. It is mentioned that in 2008 measles death accounted for 164000 deaths. Even though it is preventable with the vaccine, because some patients do not receive it on time or do not receive it at all, this extremely contagious disease is still affecting human lives, especially that of children. Another challenge for our generation is preventing people dying from TB infection. Approximately 1.8 million of people die of tuberculosis each year according to Skolnik. The number of women who died of maternal causes reached 343000 in 2008. This is another important task in addressing global health problems.
