SWOT MATRIX AND ANALYSIS

As we have discussed in previous lessons, a very good tool for environmental assessment is SWOT Analysis. By assessing the internal strengths and weaknesses of the organization’s resources capabilities and strategic position, and then evaluating the overall opportunities and threats presented by the industry in which it is competing, the entrepreneur will usually find the organization positioned within one of four quadrants. Let’s review each of these four quadrants and how each can help you.

THE FOUR QUADRANTS OF THE SWOT ANALYSIS

QUADRANT 1: STRENGTHS

Conditions in quadrant one usually mean that the organization is in a very solid position with strong resource capabilities and good market position. In addition, there is a tremendous opportunity growth within the industry with a minimal amount of threats.

QUADRANT 2: WEAKNESSES

Conditions in quadrant two mean that there is a lot of opportunities in a fast-growing market which means that competitors are going to invest heavily to gain market share. However, due to the fact that the organization has many weaknesses and very few strengths, they may not be able to survive the competitive intensity that is coming.

QUANDRANT 3: OPPORTUNITIES

Conditions in quadrant three show that while the company is in a very strong competitive position, the industry in which it is competing is in a slow growth position and/or facing some serious threats.

QUANDRANT 4: THREATS

Conditions in quadrant four are serious in that not only is the company in a competitively weak position, but the industry itself is either in decline or facing serious threats
