For a total of 87 days, there was more than 3.19 million barrels of oil spilled with over 16,000 miles of coastline that was affected. In addition, the explosion injured 17 individuals and 11 people lost their lives. The crude oil killed over 8,000 animals within 6 months of the spill. It wasn’t until May 2nd when BP began working on a relief well to help halt the leak. On May 27th, President Obama announced that he would put a halt on all offshore drilling to help address some of the issues of safety. It wasn’t until July 15th, and after several attempts was the oil flow stopped.
