PART I.
You will be asked to identify and comment upon the significance of 6 out of 8 names and terms, drawn from the following list. (30 points; 5 points each)

PART II.
The essay section of the examination will consist of three of the following questions, of which you will be asked to answer two (20 minutes each). Your answers should be well written and well organized, address the question or questions as completely as possible, and display your knowledge of the material to its fullest.
- Compare and contrast the samurai of Tokugawa Japan, the yangban class of Choson Korea, and the scholar-officials of Ming-Qing China? Please consider their political functions and the ways in which they achieved and maintained their positions as ruling elites. If you wish, you can confine your comparison to two of the three. One hint: what was the role, or non-role, played by examinations in the three societies?
- Describe and compare the histories of the Jesuits in 16th-17th century Japan and in 17th-18th century China.
- Describe how relations with Europeans were structured in Deshima in Tokugawa Japan and Guangzhou (Canton) in eighteenth and early nineteenth century China. What were the most important differences between them?
- Compare the “openings” of China and Japan by Western powers in the nineteenth century, describing both similarities and differences. If you wish, you may compare the openings of Japan and Korea instead of China and Japan. What accounts for the differences between the two experiences that you are comparing?
- Compare the Meiji Restoration reforms of the 1870s-1890s with the Self-Strengthening Movement during the same period. To what extent can the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5 be taken as a kind of referendum for the two reform programs?
Note: The 2nd exam will be held in class on Monday, November 7.
A word of advice about the exam. It is essential that you answer two essay questions and six of the names and terms identifications. Even a completely incorrect answer with get you some minimal points, whereas if you leave an answer out entirely (for example, by only doing five identifications), you will get a 0 for the missing answer. For your information, the essays will count for 35 points each, and the identifications for 5 points each.
