Knowledge management is defined as the efficient handling of information and resources within a commercial organization. This type of management allows for the company to make better and more efficient decisions. This leads to the organization to implement standard procedures that allow the staff to know how the company expects the protocols to be done. The usage of ideas and documents allows for the organization to have knowledge from previous encounters. Organizational learning is the process by which an organization improves itself over time through gaining experience and using that experience to create knowledge. The knowledge that is obtained is then taken to the organization and is transferred. Organizational learning is important because it leads to lower job turnover rates. The employee is more satisfied with their job. Increased productivity is a benefit of organizational learning.

For example, I work as a CNA and there are multiple times that these two theories come into play. For example is when we learn about the usage of machines such as the Hoyer. Some people catch onto the concept fast, some don’t. Everyone learns at a different pace.

Transformational leadership is a theory of leadership where a leader works with teams to identify needed change, creating a vision to guide the change through inspiration, This was implemented at my job because there are two patients that are Hoyer lifts. This unit was always understaffed, so they hired a person that would exclusively work on this unit only. This allows for the workers to become less stressed out. Another way that this theory was implemented at my job was when we only took their temperatures once a day. We realized it was more effective to take temps twice a day to better monitor their status.

I think learning something new every day is important. A good way to keep up on information and new practices would be to have monthly staff meetings. Being able to discuss new changes and any questions staff may have can be extremely beneficial to the overall function of the team. Another way to keep up with past information that may have been forgotten, you can do online learning modules. Important modules that should be repeated every year would be information like patient safety, fall risks, pressure ulcers, emergency protocols, proper disposal of toxic waste, etc. then having knowledge checks after each module to make sure the information was understood. That way caregivers are actively learning and even refreshing their knowledge on every day tasks that can get a little fuzzy after awhile. Also, finding time to create team building exercises can benefit the overall teamwork on the floor.
