The changing nature of today’s health care organizations, including pressure to reduce costs, improve the quality of care and meet stringent guidelines, has forced health care professionals to reexamine how they evaluate their performance. While many health care organizations have long recognized the need to look beyond financial measures when evaluating their performance, many still struggle with what measures to select and how to use the results of those measures. Because a growing number of health care professionals have readily adopted quality concepts, health care organizations should be able to quickly improve their performance measurement systems by following a few simple rules.

Healthcare organizations rely on skilled leaders to ensure patient safety, deliver high-quality care. However, many organizations do not have a defined process for identifying potential leaders and preparing them to succeed in their new role. A structured, proactive approach to leadership development in healthcare is an essential hallmark of many organizations across the care continuum.

When a patient shows up to an appointment, an emergency room, or even a lab to get blood drawn, they expect to receive the best quality medicine that they can get. This is why it is so important to develop criteria for efficiency, effectiveness, performance, efficacy, and quality in health organizations. All of these criteria are necessary for all of the others to work. You can’t be effective without having quality healthcare. You can’t perform well without having quality healthcare.

In order to understand the criteria a little better, I think of it in a goal-setting kind of way. A leader needs to set standards for all parts of the healthcare organization. There need to be expectations of everyone working there, from custodians to nurses, to leaders. Without these expectations, people won’t be doing the best that they can and patients will not be getting the best care that they can get. With everything constantly changing in the healthcare world, a leader needs to stay on top of the new practices, new ways to do certain surgeries, and new equipment. Making sure that your healthcare organization has the latest and greatest equipment will ensure that you are giving quality care to patients. Being able to provide the doctors and nurses with the best equipment allows them to perform better, be more efficient and effective, and provide higher quality care.

Overall, it is extremely important that a health leader to evaluate their health organization in order to understand how the organization is working. This will allow the leader to understand if there are any changes that need to be made, whether it is something as simple as getting a new MRI machine that is more detailed, or having the cardiologists learn a new, more efficient type of surgery.
