Do you think three strikes laws are just or unjust? Use the theories of justice—utilitarianism
Discussion 1:
Go online and research three strikes laws. Be sure to read the report, “Racial Divide: An Examination of the Impact of California’s Three Strikes Law on African-Americans and Latinos” by the Justice Policy Institute: http://www.justicepolicy.org/uploads/justicepolicy….
Do you think three strikes laws are just or unjust? Use the theories of justice—utilitarianism, libertarianism, egalitarianism, and virtue-based theories—to explain why. Do you agree that race plays a role in these cases and how they tend to be resolved?
Discussion 2:
Do some research into the “living wage.” Define it and discuss how it is measured. Then, try to find out a living wage for your town or a nearby city. Would it be possible to pay this living wage for everyone working full-time in your community, for every job? What might it take to achieve this goal? And is it worth it? Explain.
Discussion 3:
Go to the website of the Southern Poverty Law Center and examine their hate map: http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/hate-map. What kinds of hate groups exist in the US? Why do you think so many exist? Then explain to what degree does race actually explain differences in offending? Do some research online and see what arguments exist that might explain why African Americans are overrepresented among arrestees.
